Following my post two days ago on why the Zuma decision is wrong, Pierre de Vos has written two posts on the matter on his excellent Constitutionally Speaking blog. They are really worth a read from a legal point of view – and give hope that legally challenges currently underway have a chance of succeeding.

My post managed to earned a link from the UK based worldismycountry.org blog. The fact that the post was written shows the international interest in what is happening over here.

Askoggy.com also recently published a interview with me (I was surprised myself ) – so if you’re interested, head over and take a look.

After somehow being on the Afrigreater winners list, I have just ordered my Springleap tshirt – pictured right. I’m pretty stoked – it’s an awesome prize for a competition like this.

Starting up

I always have in my mind using holidays for getting personal projects finished up, but somehow I’m never quite as productive as I plan to be.

So this holiday I’ve managed to win something (still wondering how the prizes work – Springleap shirts are cool, oh well ), develop the new Sailing360 almost to completion (I hope to complete it this week) and start up a new blog – www.startupland.co.za

Someone commented that it is a bit Techcrunchish – which it is, I know. Reason for existence: no one seems to be tracking all our startups and other social web news locally. Result: I thought I’d give it a try. We’ll see how that one goes.

Besides all this I’ve got the feeling this year will be interesting – most so with the Confederations Cup and 2010 so soon. This year should see everything everyone has been working on come out for the rest of us to see – and regardless of your normal opinions of the sport, it and everything which comes with it is going to be great.

Online news in South Africa

I don’t know if it is just me, but I really do think that local news sources just don’t get it right. While parading new media sources such as video, their websites are still badly structured, suffer from a lack of constant new content and, most annoying of all, all have the same content from the news agencies. Anyone else feel the same?

My browsing of the news each day consists of a visit to the Mail & Guardian, The Times and the BBC. Later in the day I generally visit the New York Times, Time.com and the Wall Street Journal. I also occasionally drop by IOL and News24.

Perhaps I’m complaining too much – but I do feel that the international sites have better content and also importantly don’t rehash the same background information each time they do a follow up story. Guess I just have to live with it.

I’m sure something like this exists elsewhere – but I haven’t seen it – so I think this is very cool. It’s a Android App which overlays what your camera is viewing (ie showing you on your screen) with information about landmarks you can see – something called ‘Augmented Reality‘.

See the app’s website here along with a video of it in operation. Just something else which sees Android slowly win me over.

Well maybe calling it a hobby is going a bit too far; but in the theme of my last post I have began to follow the South African section of the SkyscraperCity forums. I’m not sure what it is, but keeping track of what is happening with the CTI Airport expansion, CT Railway station upgrade and the Greenpoint stadium is just interesting. Take a look for yourself – or perhaps it is just me…

I just realised that 2010 is going to be cool

One can argue for hours about the benefits and detriments of hosting the 2010 World Cup – but anyone has to conceed that having the event on our doorstep is going to be fun. Somehow this video brough that home to me.

Getting the ball rolling

Right. Sitting here, power just came back on – blame Eskom. Decide to try this personal blogging thing again – probably a stupid idea, but what the hell. Install Wordpress (again), install theme (note to self – make a new one) – start writing first post.

How does a first post actually work? Are you supposed to introduce yourself? But to who? No one is reading the blog yet.

Forget that; this is a space filler – something to get the ball rolling. Real posts can come soon, besides – I already blog … just not this whole personal thing.
